MAC VS. PC

The first thing you have to consider when buying a new computer is Mac or PC?

As you may have guessed, we're rather big fans of Apple computers here at Meta Gals. 🍏

However, it is important to look at the biggest differences between Macs and PCs to understand why we, as designers, prefer them.

A PC generally refers to a computer that runs on the Windows operating system. It is also defined as an IBM-compatible computer.

A number of different operating systems are compatible with PCs. The most popular operating system  is Microsoft Windows.

On the other hand Macintosh, commonly known as Mac, refers to several lines of computers designed by Apple.

The Mac is the only computer in the world that can run all the major operating systems, including Mac OS X, Windows XP, and Vista.

Below are some things to consider when looking at Macs and PCs.

PRICE 💰

Price is one of the differences between Windows PCs and Macs. If the price point is a big consideration for you, you’ll want to pay attention to this section.

PCs come in a variety of forms since they’re made by different manufacturers which mean they can be very cheap or very expensive, depending on what is included.

On average, Macs are going to cost you more money. They have higher upfront prices for laptops and desktop computers. Macs also cost more to maintain. To get repairs and parts under warranty, you have to go to an Apple store.

USER EXPERIENCE ☀️

The operating system on a PC or Mac is a fundamental part of the user experience. Windows 10 has turned out to be a good OS, but they still have a long way to go.

MacOS is clean, refined, stable, easy to use interface, that appeals to both experienced graphic designers and novice computer users

SECURITY 🔒

For years now, Mac users have flaunted the superior security of Macs vs PCs.

Macs suffer less attacks than Windows-based PCs, and by quite a margin.

Users are still advised to use caution while surfing the web and avoid complacency.

FROM  A DESIGN STANDPOINT 🖊

The bias towards using Macs today in the graphic design industry is based on the long-standing history and tradition of graphic designers using Macs. It has no technical basis (currently in terms of performance and hardware), since Apple moved to using 3rd party components from Intel and other companies.

HOWEVER...

The biggest advantage of Mac over PC for us personally here at Meta Gals is because we use Adobe Creative Cloud. The MacBook Pro runs Adobe software seamlessly - although we have heard that the Microsoft Surface Studio is taking a close second place.

FONTS 💻

Fonts are way clearer on Mac. The software that performs the magic is called the font renderer. On a Mac, it's part of the Quartz engine. On Windows, it's called ClearType. You'll also notice that color representation is a bit better in OS X too.

Overall- we recommend purchasing a Mac due to their superior font rendering, user experience and compatibility with Adobe Creative Cloud. However, technology is quickly changing and there are new PCs becoming available that provide similar benefits.
